THE FILMMAKER
Emily billow
is a filmmaker studying Media Arts at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. Originally from Utah but a beachgoer at heart, California is her new home. Throughout living in the heart of South Los Angeles and the coast of the city of San Pedro, she has seen first-hand the areas that suffer from social and environmental injustices. She is passionate about bringing these issues to light and making a positive impact through digital media.
Diesel Death Zone is Emily's senior thesis project which was completed in the time between August and November 2020. This film explores the vast levels of air pollution affecting "Diesel Death Zone" communities which lay in close vicinity to the Port of Los Angeles, dozens of oil wells and refineries, and the 710 freeway.
